1.5 Ton AC Condensers
A 1.5 ton condenser is designed for smaller homes, studios, and spaces under approximately 600 to 900 square feet.
The 2 ton condenser is one of our fastest moving units. It covers most homes in the 900 to 1,200 square foot range and is the most common replacement size for Philadelphia area rowhomes and smaller single family properties.
A 2.5 ton unit is appropriate for homes in the 1,200 to 1,500 square foot range. It bridges the gap between standard 2 ton and 3 ton systems and is a common choice for two story homes with moderate insulation.
Three and four ton condensers cover larger homes, duplexes, and properties with higher cooling loads. A 3 ton unit is typically suited for spaces in the 1,500 to 1,800 square foot range. A 4 ton unit steps up to handle properties closer to 2,000 to 2,400 square feet. Both sizes are available as Napoleon heat pump condensers, which provide cooling and heating from a single outdoor unit.
Five ton units are used in larger commercial installations, multi zone residential builds, and properties with substantial cooling demands. We carry two options at this size: a standard AC condenser from Arcoaire and a Napoleon heat pump condenser for buyers who need both heating and cooling capacity.
Goodman is one of the most widely distributed HVAC brands in the United States. Contractors choose Goodman because parts are easy to source, pricing is competitive, and units are built to hold up across a range of climates and applications. Our Goodman inventory covers 13 SEER, 14 SEER, and 14.3 SEER ratings across multiple tonnage sizes. The GSXN series models run on R410A refrigerant and meet current federal efficiency standards.
Napoleon Heat Pump Condensers
Napoleon heat pump condensers are available across our full tonnage range, from 1.5 to 5 ton. A heat pump condenser is a dual function outdoor unit. It cools your home in the summer and provides heat in the winter without a separate heating system. This makes it a practical upgrade for Philadelphia area homes looking to reduce their dependence on gas.
Smart Comfort and Arcoaire
Smart Comfort is a Carrier brand designed for reliable performance in residential applications. We currently stock the 1.5 ton 15 SEER model, which is a solid option for smaller homes or additions where efficiency matters. Arcoaire rounds out our 5 ton inventory with a proven 13 SEER unit suited for larger residential and light commercial installs. Both brands carry standard manufacturer warranties.

AC Condenser Buying Guide
What Size AC Condenser Do You Need?
Tonnage refers to a unit’s cooling capacity. One ton equals 12,000 BTU per hour of cooling output. A common starting estimate is one ton of cooling for every 400 to 600 square feet of living space, but that number is only a starting point.
The actual sizing depends on your home’s insulation quality, ceiling height, number of windows, sun exposure, and local climate. TheAir Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) Manual J Residential Load Calculation is the industry standard method for determining the right system size. A licensed HVAC contractor should run a full load calculation before any condenser is specified for your property.
Oversizing is one of the most common and costly mistakes in condenser replacement. An oversized unit short cycles, meaning it turns on and off too quickly to properly dehumidify the air. The result is a home that feels cool but clammy and a unit that wears out faster than it should. Bigger is not always better.
410A vs. Other Refrigerants — What You Need to Know
R410A is the current standard refrigerant for residential AC systems in the United States. It replaced R22 (commonly called Freon) as the industry standard over the past two decades.
R22 was phased out of production as of January 1, 2020 underEPA Clean Air Act Section 608 regulations. If your existing system runs on R22, replacement refrigerant is scarce and expensive. More importantly, you cannot install an R410A condenser on a system designed for R22. The refrigerants are not interchangeable, and the pressure ratings are different. If you are replacing an R22 system, plan for a full replacement that includes the condenser, evaporator coil, and lineset.
All condensers currently in stock at E&L are R410A compatible.
Matching the Condenser to Your Air Handler and Coil
A condenser does not operate independently. It works as part of a system alongside an evaporator coil and an air handler. If those components are mismatched in tonnage or refrigerant type, the system will not perform at rated efficiency, and you risk voiding the manufacturer warranty.
TheAHRI Certified Directory maintained by the Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute publishes certified matched system combinations. Before purchasing, confirm that your new condenser is rated to work with your existing coil and air handler. E&L also carries air handlers and evaporator coils. Ask us about complete matched system options if you are doing a full replacement.

What Affects the Price?
Four factors drive condenser pricing: tonnage, SEER rating, unit type, and brand. Larger units cost more. Higher efficiency ratings carry a higher upfront cost but typically reduce long term energy bills. Heat pump condensers are priced above standard AC only units because they replace two pieces of equipment. Brand differences are real but modest at the wholesale level.
Installation Costs — What to Know
The unit price and the installation cost are separate. Per thePennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, HVAC work in Pennsylvania must be performed by a licensed contractor. In Philadelphia specifically, a mechanical permit is required for AC condenser installation or replacement. Contact theCity of Philadelphia Department of Licenses and Inspections to confirm current permit requirements and fees for your project.
Installation costs vary depending on the contractor, the scope of work, and whether the coil or lineset also needs to be replaced. E&L does not provide installation services, but we can point you toward qualified contractors in the Philadelphia area. Call us to ask.
